MEDICATE WITH MEDITATE AND ELEVATE LIFE

i opened the envelope
sittin on the desk.
it was a letter from my psychiatrist.
it said, “hi, i’m sorry that it took so long
for me to get back to you.
i didn’t realized that you had a talent for writing.
i was so caught up in my work
that i couldn’t get to your poetry.
but my wife leafed through your folder
from my desk the next morning
before going to work
and read your poems.”

i took it in very slow,
each word siftin through my eyes
was like walkin upon autumn leaves
with a companion by my side.

i read a little farther in the letter.
it said, “my wife told me
that you have a good sense
when it comes to romance.
i then pressed myself into reading your work
to see what my wife meant.
the structure of your poems
are tight and clear with imagery.
they give a good illustration
of how things can go
when everything around you collapses.
i want you to remember
our talk about not having a college education …
it’s not everything.
pursue the avenue of writing,
as my wife would love to see more.”

i took the letter
and folded it just the way it came
and stuffed it back in the envelope –
i was good to go for another day.

POETRY IN A BOTTLE – PROSE

the time came upon the local reading at a local café. as i arrived there, a strange feeling pumped the fuel of my stomach. i knew that this would be something that i would never forget. nevertheless, as i had given my name to do my thing. the feathers around my ears of people gushing in and out, just about did me in. never had i spoken in front of anyone since the 8th grade, which left me to remember the many bottles of beer that i inhaled just around the corner to help me breathe. the irony of it all had finally set in. here no brown bottles were present. yet, the bottle of a few poems calibrated the air all around and bathed the walls with sprinkles of “beat.” most immediately i thought, “man i’m going to be out of place here with my few words of imagery.” the world around me seemed to have a roomy effect, one that i had not breached upon for many years, and calming me for a moment.

before this, the urgencies of my life gutted trenches in every avenue upon which i had walked. i was living on the fringes outside the bottle. these trysts of depression led to gates of wallowing silence, with a resulting lather of book reading. quietly, they were ravaging the hills of my mind with new thoughts that i had not yet fully discovered at an earlier age. what was happening to me? co-workers wondered what was going on with me. i would not speak. i would sit at breaks and lunches reading whitman each time, tryin to come up with what he was writing. finally the eyes were slowly pilfering into the bottle as saliva wetted the abundance of words that revolved around me.

in three plus years, i have found my life with “poetry in a bottle.” the glass around me, with shards eminent and radiating, bolstered images of which i never knew. imagery was setting in with the tide of the earth in spins upon my brow. yet, why had not this reached fulfillment long before? yet, i had landed in the belly of a literature straight jacket. everything else about life had dragged in the nets without much recovery or sense of imagination.

the very moment posed with a slugged fierceness against my eyes, as if being in a ring with a sparring partner who was better than i. could i really fit my works into the bottle and still feel like i had accomplished something? trying to build up some dire fire confidence with sitting there. i could hear the grunge of vehicles hissing outside, like a cop blowing his whistle directing traffic. time was getting frantically close for me to do my thing, as the list was growing shorter in elapsed chunks. my new world was starting to open, and the bottle hanging over me was like a halo without the buzzards hovering inside. knowing where i was on the list, i knew they would call me next to do my thing. after hearing my name, i rose from my seat while focusing on my destination. my clothes felt like goose bumps on my skin.

i was now at the small podium along with all my drudgery of spitting out a few poems i had. the fear there, but the “poetry in a bottle” opened up the words out of my mouth. that feel of inner release left me with a blushed look on my face. it flat out paralyzed me as the realization of the outside world pressed upon the dark crust of the bottle. as i left, i knew the bottle opener decompressed just enough for me to walk out with sanity still pocketed. i had been like a can all shook up and as if somebody had finally released the tab.

TAKE ME SOMETIME INTO YOUR SKY

livin this love song
in the sessions
of an angel
in the haze like craze,
is all about healin
to find that place
where no mistreated love
understands that tears
paid more than a price
in that silent voice
that listens so freely.
all this waitin
for ya in the country
is all for dreamin
for a broken heart
anywhere ya could be
across the map of the usa
and let me hide away
in the runway
to your shares in the forever’s.

BLEMISH SPOT CONCENTRATED FIX

this raisin face
is a metaphor
in the creams of healthy awareness
when ya smooth it
out in the words.
paper can be like … plastic surgeons.
it’s a miracle product
workin out central nervous wrinkles …
kinda like acne spots that need to go
from clogged pores.
i’ve gotten totally hooked,
and long time sufferers need a break
any way they can get it !!!

A BORROWED AMERICA

the democracy of our government
was shaped by the american indian,
but yet live on reservations
and are known as tribes –
a part of my heritage.
i’m also caucasian, what makes it a race?

the backbone of the drum,
is a musicians beat that originates
out of africa, but yet,
this ethnic bond supports
the entire country
with its minority feel in rhythmic roots –
though, i feel just like this race
bringin in like bongo drums,
in a kinda rappin showin it in the traces.

it is said that roger bacon invented
the camera just before the year of 1300.
like any picture developed –
this snapshot of this country,
i expose in the darkroom.

what does this country
possess in originality,
except for what i read in the newspaper,
of which has been quoted as a pack
of lies right from the top –
especially the headlines of iraq in flashback
burnt out flashbulb.
that’s old news but it’s the same old news
so it seems these days.
however, it introduced inflation and debt.
isn’t it wonderful?
that’s definitely originality !!

if it makes ya feel any better,
i’ll borrow from abe lincoln –
in that knowledge obtained
is the greatest asset
i can ever achieve
in this country – don’t ya agree?

TRICKS OF THE TRADE

it takes a lot of ingenuity
to attract hits to poems
that ya write
to turn on the internet.
all it takes
is a bunch of moanin n grownin
in the keys …
without doubt …
with plenty of clout.
approach matters in hors d’oeuvres
to create a social atmosphere
in finger food for a crowd.
extra plus features
is a sure fire way …
strippin drippin words …
like takin it off
with a little confidence.
tricks are everythin these days
to become a star studded attraction.

COLD WAR INVERSION FOOTHOLD

in the very depths
of the occupied zone,
is the person
who would claim
that he was a writer.
this practice –
a private practice –
is a no more kissin their asses –
the way it should be forever n ever !!!
it soars, floats, hovers
above them too high.
it’s war ya know,
and these little dramas
is just awful news for them.
for the moment,
the wounded man
havin a good laugh
with the silent man.
nothin compares to a feelin
when peelin back the shyness
n hangin in all the cafés
amongst the crowds,
as if some kind of
howlin became a connoisseur for insightful gossip.
gotta love this kind of valor,
where tours in fearlessness
became a wardrobe at breakneck speed
to make them poor things beet red !!
obviously a little money
at the bookstore –
means war on terrorists
can be done in astonishin style.

WEAR N TEAR PRESSURE CUSHION DELIVERER

i remember the time i picked up the kids
when they were about 8 or 9.
i wasn’t in the picture,
but only on the outside.
i had taken them camping
for a weekend.
when it was time
to take them home,
the youngest one
just started to cry his brains out.
i had no idea
what brought that on.
about two years later,
i traveled back and forth
from ripley ny
to warren pa –
for what they call that sharing kinda thing
in these kinds of things
to have them for the weekends.
this routine went on
for quite awhile,
and both had finally opened up
as to what was happening.
i knew i was just a nobody,
and nobody would listen.
i simply told them,
“you have to talk to someone that is important.”
i finally got a call
from social services
when the kids were 12 and 13.
that’s how i got those boys.
betrayal is the word these days:
a nobody poet in the eyes of mainstream
trying to show
how to dissolve
a few more spurs on the heels of life.

DWARFS – REFINING DISTINCTION

at birth i was stunted.
i may be little,
but i am also dominant.
i’m like a golfer,
or a bowler
where a handicap
comes into play.
you can call me “Ant”
out of respect.
little guys know about drive,
and taller guys
can be stunted in growth
and be socially under-developed,
because words and life need time
within to nurture a teaching concept
for all of mankind.
